Do these things right now, in this order
1. Stop using anything that sparks. No light switches, no garage door opener, no vape, no candles. 2. Turn off the burner knobs and the oven if they're on. 3. Open windows and exterior doors. 4. Get everyone, including pets, outside and away from the building. 5. From outside, on your cell phone, call the gas utility's emergency line. They come out for gas odor calls around the clock. If the smell is strong, or you hear hissing, skip straight to step 4. Walk out. Don't stop to pack, unplug, or take pictures.
What not to do, even if the smell seems small
Don't flip any switch, on or off. A switch makes a small arc. Don't start your car in an attached garage. Don't use a fan to clear the air. Don't hunt for the leak with a lighter, a match, or a phone flashlight held right against a fitting. Don't pull the range out from the wall. That flex connector behind it is the last thing you want to stress. Don't open the back panel or touch the gas shutoff valve if you're unsure which way it turns. Utility crews carry meters that read what your nose can't.
When to leave and when to shut things off
Leave if the smell is strong, if it's spreading past the kitchen, if anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, or has a headache, or if you hear hissing near the appliance. In a condo or stacked apartment, knock on neighbors' doors on your way out and tell the building manager. Gas travels through shared walls and chases. If, and only if, you can safely reach the shutoff valve behind or beside the range without moving the unit or squeezing into a tight space, turn it. Skip it otherwise. The utility can shut gas at the meter, and that's their job.
Faint smells that might not be an emergency
A short whiff when you first light a burner is common. Gas flows a second before it ignites. Same with a brief odor during oven preheat as dust burns off. What isn't normal: a smell with no burner running, a smell that lingers after cooking, a yellow or orange lazy flame instead of steady blue, soot on your pots, or a pilot light that keeps going out. Coastal homes in Venice and San Pedro get corroded burner parts from salt air. Valley heat and dust clog orifices. Both show up as a weak, smelly flame.

Should I turn off the breaker to my kitchen?
No. Flipping a breaker creates a spark, and the panel may sit in the very air you're worried about. Leave electrical alone, get outside, and let the utility handle shutoffs.
