How Often a Dryer Vent Really Needs Cleaning
If your dryer takes two cycles and the clothes still come out warm and damp, start with the vent, not the dryer. Nine times out of ten in LA homes, the duct behind the machine is packed with lint and the hot air has nowhere to go. The laundry room feels like a sauna because of it. Most people blame the dryer and end up replacing a machine that was fine.

What a clogged vent quietly does to your dryer
Lint builds up a little with every load, and it narrows the duct the way plaque narrows a pipe. The dryer still heats. But the moist air can't escape, so it circles back into the drum, clothes stay damp, and cycles run long. The heating element and thermal fuse switch on and off far more than they were built for, and sooner or later one of them quits. That's the call we get. The other risk is heat and dry lint sitting together in a tight space, which is how laundry room fires start. Neither problem announces itself. It creeps up over a couple of years.
The five-minute habit that prevents most of it
Pull the lint screen every single load and wipe it clean with your hand. Once a month, rinse the screen under hot water. If water beads up and sits on the mesh instead of running through, dryer sheet residue has sealed it, so scrub it with a soft brush and dish soap. Then look behind the dryer. The flexible duct should curve gently, not fold flat or kink against the wall. In tight apartment closets and stacked units, that duct gets crushed when somebody shoves the machine back. Leave it two or three inches of room.
How often the vent itself needs a real cleaning
Once a year covers most single-family homes with a short vent run to an outside wall. Go every six months if you run more than five loads a week, if there's long hair or a shedding pet in the house, or if the duct climbs through a wall or crosses an attic. Stacked closet units in condos and apartments often vent through a long shared chase, and those clog faster than anyone expects. Coastal homes have another wrinkle: salt air and humidity make lint clump and stick instead of blowing free. Valley heat is drier, but summer dryer use spikes, so the schedule holds either way. If you can't remember the last cleaning, it's due.
Signs prevention time has already passed
Check for these before your next load. Clothes hot to the touch but still wet when the cycle ends. The top of the dryer too warm to rest your hand on. A scorched or musty smell while it runs, weak airflow outside, or an exterior vent flap that barely moves. Lint collecting on the floor behind the machine. A dryer that shuts off mid-cycle and won't restart until it cools. Any one of those means the duct is restricted right now, so stop using it heavily and get it looked at. Call us and we'll sort out whether it's the vent, the machine, or both.
What we check when we come out
We start at the airflow, not the parts. We measure how much air actually leaves the exterior vent, then trace the duct from the machine to the wall. Crushed flex duct, screened vent caps, bird nests, long attic runs with too many elbows, all of that shows up fast. Then we test the components clogged vents kill: thermal fuses, heat sensors, the element. HOA rules in condos sometimes limit what we can touch inside a shared chase, so we'll tell you plainly where our work stops and what the building has to handle. We're an independent shop and we service all major brands.
How Often a Dryer Vent Really Needs Cleaning — what people ask
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
You can safely vacuum the first few feet behind the dryer and clear the exterior vent flap. Long runs through walls, attics, or roofs need proper rods and a blower. Never open the dryer's rear panel yourself.
Does a shorter vent run still need cleaning?
Yes, just less often. Short straight runs to a nearby wall stay cleaner, but lint still collects at the vent cap outside. Check that flap twice a year and make sure it opens all the way when the dryer runs.
Will cleaning the vent fix a dryer that won't heat?
Sometimes. Restricted airflow trips thermal fuses and heat sensors, and those parts don't reset themselves once they're blown. Clearing the vent keeps it from happening again, but the failed part still needs replacing.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, a blinking code. We ask a few questions and write down your brand and model so the van gets loaded right.
- Step 2
We pick a window
We build arrival windows around real traffic instead of wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation, and we plan the route around it.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and tells you what he found in plain words. Nothing gets ordered or replaced until you approve it. Common parts ride along in the van.

Why homeowners call us
- Stacked units and tight closetsApartment and condo laundry usually sits in a closet with two inches of clearance. We pull, service, and reset stacked washer-dryer sets without wrecking the drywall or the drain pan underneath.
- Coastal air, valley heatNear the water, salt air rusts hinges and control boards. Inland, heat cooks compressors and dryer vents. So we check for the wear your zip code causes, not only the part you called about.
- HOA-aware visitsBuildings have rules: loading dock windows, service elevators, insurance paperwork, quiet hours. We work inside those limits so your manager stays calm and the repair still happens on schedule.
- Four states, one callCalifornia, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. Same intake, same questions, same plain talk about the repair. One number to remember when the second home or the rental unit acts up.
- All major brands, gas & electricEvery major appliance brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent shop.
- Straight answersIf replacing beats repairing, you hear it from us first.
