That's a real fault, not a quirky old dryer. Nine times out of ten, the heat is fine and the air is the problem. Here's how to sort it out.

What a two-cycle load is actually telling you
A dryer doesn't bake clothes. It pulls in room air, heats it, blows it through the drum, and pushes the wet air outside. Drying speed depends on how fast that moist air leaves the house. Choke the exhaust and the same heat just circulates, damp and hot. Clothes come out warm but wet. That's the classic signature. If clothes come out cool and wet instead, you're looking at a heat problem, which is a different repair. Warm and damp after a full cycle points hard at airflow. In LA, we see this most in apartment stacked units and condos with long vent runs buried in a wall.
Cause one: lint in the duct, the cheap fix
Lint gets past every filter. It settles in the flex hose behind the dryer, in the crushed elbow where the machine got pushed back against the wall, and in the rigid duct inside the wall. Add coastal humidity and it packs into a felt mat. A four-inch duct with an inch of buildup moves a fraction of the air it should. This is the first thing to rule out because it's the most common and the least invasive. Also check the outside flap. If it's painted shut, screened over, or blocked by a bird nest, nothing gets out no matter how clean the duct is.
Cause two: the vent run itself, or a shared building stack
Sometimes the duct is clean and still wrong. Foil accordion hose behaves like a lint trap by design. A run that climbs three floors in a condo, or snakes forty feet across a garage ceiling, needs help no dryer can give. Crushed hose behind a stacked unit in a tight closet is the most common thing we find in Westside apartments. Shared building stacks are their own headache; if your neighbor's dryer is dumping into the same pipe, HOA maintenance usually has to handle it, not us. Ventless and condenser dryers skip the duct but need a clean condenser coil and drain, or they stall the same way.
Cause three: parts inside the machine
After airflow, we look at components. A worn blower wheel or a loose blower hub moves less air even with a clear vent. A stretched belt lets the drum turn slow. A partly failed heating element or one bad element leg on an electric dryer gives you lukewarm air, so the load dries but takes forever. Moisture sensor bars coated in dryer sheet residue read clothes as dry early and shut off the cycle before they are. On gas units, a lazy igniter or a flame that cuts out mid-cycle produces the same slow result. All of that is behind panels. That's ours.
Safe checks you can do right now, and where to stop
Clean the lint screen and rinse it with warm water if it feels waxy. Pull the dryer forward a few inches and look at the hose for kinks or crush. Go outside during a cycle and put your hand at the vent hood; you should feel strong warm air, not a whisper. Wipe the moisture sensor bars just inside the drum with rubbing alcohol. Try one load with nothing else running to rule out an overloaded drum. Stop there. Don't remove panels, don't touch gas connections, don't pull the back off a stacked unit. Can a clogged vent actually start a fire?
Trapped lint plus heat is a known fire risk, which is why long dry times deserve attention rather than a second cycle. If you smell scorching or the dryer body gets very hot, stop using it and call us.
My dryer is in a closet with no window. Does that matter?
Yes. Dryers need makeup air. A sealed closet with a solid door starves the machine. Louvered doors or an air gap help. We check closet airflow on every stacked-unit call in condos and apartments.
