Washer Won't Drain or Spin
You opened the lid and found a tub full of gray water and soaked towels. The cycle ran, but nothing drained. Or the drum just sat there while the machine hummed. This happens a lot in LA — stacked units in apartments, garage machines in the Valley, laundry closets in condos. Here's what's usually behind it, and what you can safely check yourself.

What a no-drain, no-spin actually tells us
Most washers refuse to spin until the water is gone. So a drain problem looks like a spin problem. If the tub still holds water, start with drainage. If the tub is empty and the drum still won't turn, that points somewhere else — the lid switch, the door lock, or the belt and drive parts. Listen closely. A pump that whines or grinds is trying to move water and failing. Total silence during the drain portion of the cycle usually means the machine never got the signal to drain, or a safety switch is holding the cycle back.','Note which one you hear. It saves time on the call.
Cause family one: a clog in the path out
This is the most common and the least dramatic. Lint, a sock, coins, or a hair clip can jam the pump or the hose. Drain hoses in tight laundry closets get kinked behind the machine when someone pushes it back against the wall. In older LA buildings, the standpipe in the wall may be partly blocked by years of soap scum, so the washer drains slowly and then backs up. If water rises in the standpipe and spills over, the house drain is the suspect, not the washer.
Cause family two: switches, locks, and lids
Front loaders will not spin with an unlatched door. Top loaders use a lid switch or lid lock. When that part wears out or the strike gets bent, the machine fills, agitates, then quits before spinning. Signs to watch for: the door pops open mid-cycle, the lock clicks over and over, or an error code shows on the panel. Overloading causes a similar stall. A big comforter can throw the load off balance, so the washer slows down, tries to redistribute, and gives up with water still inside.
Cause family three: pump, belt, or control
If the path is clear and the door locks fine, the failure is inside. Drain pumps burn out or seize. Belts stretch and slip, so the motor runs while the drum barely moves. Control boards and door lock circuits fail too, which is why some machines never even attempt the drain step. On stacked units the pump sits in a cramped spot behind panels — that is our work, not yours. Same for anything involving wiring or stored electrical charge. Unplug it, stop there, and call us.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the washer first. Pull the drain hose out of the standpipe and look for kinks or a visible clog at the end. Check that the hose is not shoved more than a few inches down the pipe. Run water into the standpipe with a cup and see if it accepts it. Remove half the load and try a spin-only cycle. Look for a filter access door at the front bottom of a front loader — many have one, and the manual shows how to drain it into a shallow pan. Do not open panels or remove the back.
What we do differently on site
We test rather than guess. That means checking the pump for continuity, watching current draw during the drain step, and reading error history from the control. We can tell a slow house drain from a failing pump by measuring how fast water leaves. We work around building realities too — HOA laundry closets, second-floor units, coastal machines with corroded connections from salt air, and Valley garages where heat cooks the electronics. We carry common pumps, hoses, lid switches, and door locks. Independent shop, all major brands. Tell us your cross streets when you call us so we can time the drive.

Washer Won't Drain or Spin — quick answers
Can I get the water out myself before the tech arrives?
Yes. Unplug the machine, lower the drain hose into a bucket below the drum level, and let gravity work. Have towels ready. Front loaders often have a small filter drain door at the bottom front.
Why does my washer drain but still not spin?
That usually points away from the pump. Common causes are a worn lid switch or door lock, an unbalanced load, or a slipping belt. Try a smaller load on spin-only to narrow it down.
Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?
Depends on age and what failed. A clog or a lid switch is a small job on almost any machine. We'll tell you what we find and what we think, then you decide.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
You call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, blinking code. We ask a few questions and note your brand and model so the van is loaded right.
- Step 2
We pick a window
Arrival windows get built around real traffic, not wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation and we plan the route around it.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
Our tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and explains what he found in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets ordered or replaced. Common parts ride along.

Why homeowners call us
- Stacked units and tight closetsApartment and condo laundry lives in a closet with two inches of clearance. We pull, service, and reset stacked washer-dryer sets without wrecking drywall or the drain pan underneath.
- Coastal air, valley heatSalt air rusts hinges and control boards near the water. Inland heat cooks compressors and dryer vents. We check for the wear your zip code causes, not just the part you called about.
- HOA-aware visitsBuildings have rules. Loading dock windows, service elevators, insurance paperwork, quiet hours. We work inside those limits so your manager stays calm and the repair still happens on schedule.
- Four states, one callCalifornia, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. Same intake, same questions, same plain talk about the repair. One number to remember when the second home or the rental unit acts up.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
