That mix of symptoms tells us something before we ever get on the 405. Here's what a warm refrigerator usually means, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call us.

What "not cooling" actually tells us
A refrigerator does not make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. So when food gets warm, either the cold is not being made, or it is not being moved where you need it. Pay attention to the split. Freezer cold but fridge warm usually points at airflow or a defrost problem. Both compartments warm points at the sealed system or the compressor circuit. A box that runs constantly and still feels lukewarm is a different story again. Tell us which pattern you have when you call. It narrows the visit before we load the van in traffic.
Airflow and dirty condenser coils
This is the cheap end, and in Los Angeles it is common. Valley heat plus a fridge crammed into a tight alcove means the coils cannot shed heat. Add pet hair, dust, and a condo kitchen with no clearance and the unit runs and runs. Inside, airflow matters too. Stacked grocery bags against the back vent block the cold air path. An overpacked freezer does the same thing. Coastal homes get another version of this: salt air corrodes the condenser fan and it slows down. If your fridge feels hot on the sides or bottom and the motor never seems to stop, coils and fans are the first place we look.
Defrost problems and the frozen coil
Behind the freezer's back wall sits an evaporator coil. A fan blows air across it and pushes that air into the fresh food side. Frost builds on that coil normally, and a defrost cycle melts it off. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or control fails, frost turns into a solid ice block. Air stops moving. The freezer stays cold because it is right next to the ice, but your fridge climbs into the fifties. Clues: a fan sound that changes pitch or stops, water pooling under crisper drawers, or a freezer back wall coated in heavy white buildup. This needs a technician and parts, not a fix from a video.
Safe checks you can do right now
Confirm the outlet works with a lamp or phone charger. Check that a GFCI in the garage or a tripped breaker isn't the cause. Look at the temperature dials, especially if kids or a cleaner bumped them. Pull the fridge out a few inches if the floor allows and vacuum visible dust off the back and bottom grille. Make sure the door seals close flush and nothing hangs in the way. Empty a stuffed freezer down a bit. Listen: does the compressor hum, and does air move inside? Stop there. Skip anything behind a panel, near the compressor, or involving refrigerant lines. Call us with what you noticed.

Almost always one. The fresh food side gets its cold air from the freezer through a duct and fan. Blocked airflow, a failed evaporator fan, or an iced coil breaks that delivery while the freezer stays cold.
Can I save the food inside?
Keep doors shut. A closed refrigerator holds safe temperatures for a few hours; a full freezer holds longer. Move dairy, meat, and leftovers to a cooler with ice. Anything above 40°F for over two hours should go.
Should I unplug it and let it thaw first?
Sometimes that restores cooling for a day or two by melting an ice block. It does not fix the defrost part that failed. Mention it when you call us so we know what we're chasing.
