Age is the first thing we ask about
Most dishwashers have a useful life measured in years, not decades. Under about six or seven years, repair usually makes sense — the tub, racks, and pump housing still have life left. Past twelve, we start looking harder. Racks rust, door seals stiffen, and the tub itself can develop hairline cracks that no part fixes. In LA that clock moves at different speeds. Coastal homes in Santa Monica or San Pedro see salt air chew on hinges and metal trim. Valley kitchens in Van Nuys run hot, which is rough on control boards. Same model, different wear.
What broke matters more than how old it is
Faults fall into rough buckets. Wear items — drain pumps, door latches, spray arm bearings, inlet valves, float switches — are the everyday stuff. Those are worth fixing at almost any reasonable age. Then there's the expensive core: main control board plus a failed motor, or a leaking tub. When two big items fail together on an older machine, that's when we stop and talk. A dishwasher that won't drain is often a clog, not a dead pump. A dishwasher that won't start may just be a door latch. Cheap fixes hide behind scary symptoms all the time.
Can we actually get the part
A repair only works if the part exists. Newer models are usually well supplied. Discontinued lines, imported units sold briefly here, and older builds can be a different story — the board is gone, or it ships from far away on a long lead time. We check availability before recommending anything, so you're not living without a dishwasher for weeks waiting on a box. If the part is unavailable, we say so plainly. That's a replacement conversation, not a repair one, and there's no point dressing it up.
How the visit actually goes
We start with what you saw and heard. Then we run the machine and watch it fail, because the symptom tells us where to look. We check the drain path, the fill, the spray pattern, the door seal, and the electronics that report faults. If it's a straightforward part swap we usually handle it on the spot. If it's borderline, we lay out both roads: what the repair involves, what parts are involved, what we'd expect afterward. You make the call. We don't push work onto a machine that shouldn't get it.
Times we tell you to replace it
A cracked inner tub leaking onto your subfloor. Rust through the bottom of the door. A stack of failures at once on a fifteen-year-old unit. A model whose board is discontinued. In condos and apartments, add one more: a stacked or under-counter install where the cabinet cutout is tight and the old unit is fighting the plumbing. Sometimes new fits better and drains better. Small things you can safely check first
Before we drive out, two safe looks. Pull the bottom rack and clear the filter basket — food debris there causes poor cleaning and slow drains more than any failed part. Then look at the spray arm holes and poke out any stuck bits. Also confirm the door latches fully; a door that doesn't click won't start a cycle. Don't remove panels, don't touch wiring, and don't pull the machine out if the water supply is behind it. If those checks don't change anything, describe what you saw when you call — it shortens the visit.
